FMP – The Art of Origami

Within the concept of manipulation one of the art forms I wanted to explore was origami. This uses the technique of folding to achieve contemporary paper sculptures using a single medium – paper.

Initially I’d assumed it would be too difficult to realistically achieve anything worth exploring in my FMP, however was proved wrong by an easy step by step youtube tutorial. The video by ‘MR. CREATOR’ was just under 3 minutes long and included visuals of the process which were easy to follow and replicate on my own paper.

Additionally I’d found interesting the historical context, including how the ancient art form originated in Asia thousands of years ago (most probably with Buddhist monks). It is not surprising that the mesmerising products of history are still used so widely today. Within recent years, department stores like Selfridges and big names including Hermes, Liz Earle and Pandora have incorporated the oriental technique into visual merchandising, producing some awe worthy art instillations and window displays.

I would really like to take this workshop further and perhaps produce a digital print to be applied to origami outcomes and therefore will hopefully be able to come up with some initial design ideas.
