One of my favourite designers is Vivienne Westwood. Not only is she female and British but she is one of the most politically active ‘promotionalists’ in fashion. Her unapologetic opinions are presented on the runway through graphic design, technical skill representative of concept and styling as a tool for expression.
Her controversial ‘destroy’ t-shirt was a direct form of communication against the abhorrent treatment of citizens from dictatorship and tyrannical reign worldwide and as a supporter of the Green Party, Westwood gifted them £300,000 after a politically inspired collection for AW15.
The 2012 Paralympic closing ceremony saw an extravagant display of controversial protest when the designer came out under a giant banner plastered with the words ‘Climate Change Revolution’ in promotion of her new project to tackle climate change. More recent statements against convention include cutting off her hair and posting an apparent box of asbestos to former president David Cameron and a donation of £1million to charity Cool Earth in aid of again, tackling climate change.
